India’s weightlifting campaign at the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026 has begun on a high, with Rishikanta Singh Chanambam winning a silver medal in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event. It is India’s second medal overall at the Games and the first medal in weightlifting.
Rishikanta produced an outstanding performance throughout the competition. He successfully lifted 121kg in the snatch, setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the discipline. He then added 143kg in the clean & jerk, finishing with a total lift of 264kg (121kg + 143kg) to secure the silver medal.
Although he narrowly missed out on gold, Rishikanta’s record-breaking snatch was one of the biggest highlights of the event. His performance has given India a perfect start in weightlifting and raised hopes for more medals in the coming days.
Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq won the gold medal, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya finished with the bronze medal in the men’s 60kg category.
Weightlifting has traditionally been one of India’s strongest sports at the Commonwealth Games, and expectations are once again high. With several top Indian lifters yet to compete, fans will be hoping to see 10 to 12 medals from the weightlifting team by the end of the competition.
Rishikanta’s silver medal has set the tone for the campaign. If the opening event is any indication, India could be in for another successful run in weightlifting at CWG 2026.
Congratulations to Rishikanta Singh on a brilliant silver medal and a new Commonwealth Games snatch record!
