It was not the Commonwealth Games campaign that Indian fans were hoping for.
India’s fastest active sprinter, Gurindervir Singh, has been knocked out in the first round of the men’s 100m after finishing 28th overall with a time of 10.39 seconds. Only the top 17 athletes qualified for the semifinals, and unfortunately, Gurindervir missed out.
The most disappointing part is that this performance was well below his personal best of 10.09 seconds, which he achieved earlier this month. Everyone expected him to come close to that mark, but it wasn’t his day on the track.
The qualification round was topped by Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati, who clocked an impressive 10.00 seconds, showing the level of competition in the event.
As India’s only representative in the men’s 100m, Gurindervir’s early exit is undoubtedly disappointing. Expectations were high because he is currently the fastest active man in India, and fans believed he could fight for a place in the semifinals.
One thing that surprised many fans was the reaction of the commentary panel. Instead of analyzing what went wrong, they largely praised the performance. While every athlete deserves respect for reaching this stage, it’s also fair to acknowledge that 10.39 seconds was below Gurindervir’s own standards. Honest analysis is part of sports.
That said, one race does not define an athlete. Gurindervir has consistently shown his potential and remains one of India’s brightest sprinting talents.
With the Asian Games on the horizon, Indian fans will be hoping to see him bounce back stronger and produce the kind of performance everyone knows he is capable of.
