The Indian Army runs a Talent Scouting Programme aimed at identifying young sporting talent. Under this programme, talented kids are scouted, given proper training, and provided a real shot at moving forward in their sport.
How Does This Scouting Actually Work?
The Indian Army runs this talent hunt through its Army Sports Companies. And the whole idea behind it can be summed up in one line:
“Find talent before talent is lost.”
In simple terms — talent can come from anywhere. A village akhada, a school ground, or a sports field in some small town. The Army’s goal is to make sure no talent slips through the cracks just because it never got the right platform.
That’s why the Indian Army works closely with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) — together, they identify young athletes and train them the right way.
Under this comes the Army Boys Sports Company (ABSC) scheme, which takes in boys aged 8 to 16 and trains them specifically for sporting excellence. During selection, it’s not just current performance that matters — the athlete’s future potential is weighed in too. In other words, it’s not only about how good you are today, but how far you can go.
Last year, we hosted shooter Shriyanka Sadangi on our podcast, and she spoke about how the sports quota gave her career a whole new direction.
She gave the trials, performed well, and once selected, began her professional training under the Indian Army. Today, she holds several National and International medals, and she also secured India’s shooting quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics — a huge achievement in itself.
This is a great example of how someone identified through the Army’s talent scouting system can go on to reach this level. And that’s exactly why this can be a golden opportunity for young athletes — a chance to prove their talent and become part of the Indian Army’s sports system.
