In a surprising turn of events at the national wrestling trials for the upcoming Asian Championship (scheduled from April 6 to 12), World Championship medalist Antim Panghal faced an unexpected defeat in the women’s 53kg category.
Antim, who has been one of India’s most promising wrestlers on the international stage, was outperformed by Meenakshi, who delivered an impressive and composed performance to secure her place in the Indian squad.
The bout took place between Antim Panghal and Meenakshi, where Meenakshi pinned Antim to secure her place in the Asian Championship. As a result, Antim Panghal is out of the competition, which is a big setback for India, as a World Championship medalist will not be participating in the event.
No disrespect to Meenakshi, but this shows the true nature of sports — whether you are a world medalist or a national medalist, everyone has to start from zero. That is the beauty of sports.
The match was also very interesting. Antim started slowly and was trailing 0–2 in the beginning, but she recovered to make it 1–2 by the end of the first three minutes.
Every time Antim went for a leg attack, she was met by an alert Meenakshi, who defended well.
With 30 seconds remaining, Antim leveled the score 2–2 by pushing Meenakshi out.
However, Meenakshi held her nerves and executed a strong takedown, followed by a back hold, and finished the match with a pinfall victory.
This result shows that Antim Panghal will need to bounce back before major events like the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. She remains one of India’s top wrestlers, and the nation will hope to see her win medals in the future.
