Indian hockey walks into the Asian Games this year carrying a lot more pressure than usual and for both the men’s and women’s teams, it’s not really about the Asian Games trophy itself. It’s about what winning it actually unlocks: a direct ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Why is the men’s team under so much pressure right now?
Form-wise, it’s been a rocky year. In the FIH Pro League 2025–26, India’s home leg in Rourkela was genuinely bad — four matches, four losses, and a goal difference of minus 14. The bad run carried into the next leg in Hobart, Australia, where they lost their opening match too, before finally breaking the losing streak with a shootout win over Australia. To their credit, the team recovered well by the end of the season, closing out the London leg with wins over reigning World Champions Germany and Olympic champions the Netherlands, and finished the season 8th out of 9 teams. So “bad form” isn’t the whole story it was more of a mixed, up-and-down season with a genuinely poor start.
Then came the 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.
India failed to reach the semi-finals after defeats against the Netherlands and Argentina in the group stage. They eventually finished 8th, losing the seventh-place match to Belgium on a shootout. There were positives Harmanpreet Singh finished among the tournament’s leading scorers but the overall result left India with plenty to think about.Now comes the Asian Games.
Because this time, the gold medal comes with something much bigger attached to it.Under the LA28 hockey qualification system, the Asian Games men’s and women’s champions qualify directly for the 2028 Olympics.
India already used this route for Paris 2024. The men’s team won gold at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou and secured its Olympic place.The situation is similar in 2026. Win gold in Japan and India books its place in Los Angeles.Finish lower, and the Olympic journey isn’t over — but the team would have to go through the qualification tournament route instead. The top six men’s finishers and top four women’s finishers, excluding the Asian Games champions, earn places in the FIH Olympic Qualifiers.So there is a huge difference between winning gold and simply finishing inside the qualification places.
What about the women’s team
The women’s team arrives with a very different story. India missed the Paris 2024 Olympics after losing to Japan in the final qualification playoff. That meant a team that had finished fourth at Tokyo 2020 wasn’t in Paris at all. This time, there are reasons for optimism.India produced its best Women’s World Cup finish in decades in 2026, ending the tournament in 5th place. The team also showed that it could compete against some of the world’s strongest sides.
This year, though, they turned in their best World Cup performance in 52 years, finishing 5th at the 2026 FIH Women’s World Cup after beating Germany 3-1 in the classification match — their best result since finishing 4th at the very first Women’s World Cup back in 1974. They lost only one match in the entire tournament, and that was to the Netherlands, the Olympic champions.
A 5th-place finish is a big confidence boost, but it doesn’t come with an Olympic ticket attached. Just like the men, the women’s team’s cleanest route to a direct LA 2028 spot is winning gold at the Asian Games. Miss that, and they’re right back in qualifier territory — exactly the situation that cost them their place at Paris 2024 last time.
What happens straight after the Asian Games?
Regardless of how the Asian Games goes, the men’s team has almost no time to breathe. The Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2026 is scheduled for October 27 to November 5, co-hosted by Mohali and Jalandhar in Punjab. the first time the state has hosted a major international hockey tournament. It’ll feature the top Asian hockey nations, including Pakistan, China, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea, with the India–Pakistan clash on November 1 expected to be one of the biggest draws of the tournament.
That back-to-back scheduling Asian Games in September/October, Asian Champions Trophy at home in Punjab right after makes this stretch genuinely one of the most important few weeks Indian hockey has had in years. A strong showing across both tournaments would go a long way toward proving the team’s recent World Cup slump was a blip, not a trend.
So, what is really at stake?
For the men’s team, this is an opportunity to respond after an inconsistent Pro League campaign and an 8th-place World Cup finish.For the women’s team, it is a chance to turn their recent progress into something even bigger: a place at the Los Angeles Olympics. And for both teams, there is a relatively straightforward equation.

If gold doesn’t happen, the Olympic dream does not disappear.
