Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have done it! India has a World Championships medal in women’s doubles again, after 15 long years. History has been made in New Delhi.
What a comeback by Treesa and Gayatri! They defeated China’s 4th-seeded pair Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian 16-21, 21-15, 21-13, and stormed straight into the semifinals. Treesa Jolly beat a World No. 4 Chinese pair at the BWF World Championships, and honestly, it doesn’t get much bigger than that.
And can we just talk about Gopi sir watching his daughter conquer the world? What a proud father moment that must have been. The tight hug he gave her after the match said everything — not just a proud father, but a proud coach too, someone who has always wanted his daughter and his players to make India proud on the world stage. And what better place to do that than a World Championship held right at home?
The duo played one of the biggest matches of their lives. You could feel the pressure and the intensity throughout, and honestly, it showed — both of them could barely hold back their tears when they won. And why wouldn’t they be emotional? They had just secured their first-ever World Championship medal, and they did it at home, in front of their own crowd. It’s a moment they’ll remember forever.
Right now, they’ve only made it to the semifinals of the BWF World Championships 2026, but we all want to see them go one step further. Reaching the final won’t be easy — but then again, champions don’t take the easy road, that’s exactly what makes them champions. Here’s hoping Treesa and Gayatri go all the way and bring home India’s first-ever gold medal in women’s doubles at the BWF World Championships.
